A classic scene from L. Frank Baum's original 1900 storybook, Dorothy and Toto watching nervously as the Winged Monkeys capture the Cowardly Lion, bold and a little dramatic, exactly the kind of illustration kids love returning to again and again. This is straight from W.W. Denslow's original artwork for the very first Wizard of Oz book, decades before the famous film.

Description:
A moody, atmospheric painting by Walter Crane from 1865, based on the medieval ballad "La Belle Dame Sans Merci," a knight meeting a mysterious fairy woman deep in the forest. Rich greens, a white horse, and a crescent moon overhead give this piece a quiet, enchanted feeling, a real change of pace from Crane's bolder, flatter illustration work elsewhere in this collection.
A beautiful pick for anyone drawn to folklore, medieval romance, or the moodier end of 19th century painting.

Description:
This one's a departure from soft garden scenes, in the best way. Ernst Haeckel was a 19th century biologist and illustrator obsessed with the strange beauty of marine life, and this plate, "Actiniae" (sea anemones), from his 1904 masterwork Kunstformen der Natur, is one of his most striking. Coral pinks, deep greens, and alien shapes crowd every inch of the composition, part science, part psychedelic underwater dream.
It's a genuinely different kind of puzzling challenge too. Instead of Impressionist brushstrokes blending into soft transitions, you're working with dozens of distinct, textured little sea creatures, each one its own small puzzle within the puzzle.

About Us
Our story
Why we started this
Carrboro Puzzles started at our own kitchen table. Puzzling became a regular part of family life for us, especially as a grounding activity for our autistic daughter, and over time it turned into something the whole family looked forward to. We noticed a gap: most puzzles on the market are either cheap and disposable, or expensive without much to show for it. We wanted something better, so we built it.
We believe a good puzzle should do two things. It should give you something meaningful to focus on, and it should be worth displaying once you're done. That's why every puzzle we sell starts with real art, genuine paintings, prints, and illustrations that have earned their place in museums and collections for generations. Nothing generated, nothing fake, just the real thing.
We're a small, Carrboro, North Carolina-based company built around a simple idea: puzzling is better when it means something. Whether you're piecing one together solo or spreading it across the table with your family, we make puzzles for people who take that time seriously.
